2) How to maintain your LinkedIn account.
The most important maintenance task that you need to keep in mind, is making sure that the email address that you have designated in LinkedIn as your PRIMARY email address, is a working e-mail address. People tend to forget, that without a valid email address, nobody within the Gemini Consulting Alumni Network will be able to contact them. Within less than 6 months after the G** Alumni Network group started there was already about 10 people with invalid email addresses. Most of them are former Gemini Consultants working with CapGemini, who forgot to update their e-mail address domain from cgey.com to capgemini.com
Other situations leading to invalid e-mail addresses are for instance when a person used a company email address as his/her primary LinkedIn email address, and then moved into another company..without updating their LinkedIn profile.
In order to avoid this type of problems, I suggest that you get a permanent e-mail address (hotmail, gmail, yahoo, etc.) instead of using a work, or internet provider email address. That way you can change jobs or internet providers and still have a valid email address in your LinkedIn profile, that other members can use to contact you.
To check what e-mail address you have declared as your primary e-mail address do this:
- Press the 'Account & Settings' link which is located on the top right section of any LinkedIn page.
- Scroll down the page until you find a section titled "Personal Information". Press the 'Email Addresses' link.
- Make sure that the email address that you have chosen as your 'Primary' email address is valid
This page allows you to add new e-mail addresses to your profile, and to select which of your e-mail addresses you want to identify as your 'Primary' email address. Remember that the e-mail address you designate as your Primary e-mail address, is the one that LinkedIn will use to to send you messages from Gemini Consulting Alumni Network Group members. If your 'Primary' e-mail address is invalid, you will NOT receive those messages.
Please also note that your Primary email address needs to be confirmed. If you select an e-mail address that is NOT confirmed as your primary e-mail address, you will NOT receive any e-mails from fellow group members, UNTIL you confirm the e-mail address. Confirming the e-mail address basically means that you have shown that you are the owner of the e-mail address. You show that by answering an e-mail message that LinkedIn sends you when you first add a new e-mail address to your profile. If you haven't confirmed an e-mail address and can't find the confirmation e-mail that LinkedIn sent you, just select the 'unconfirmed' email address and press 'Send Confirmation Message. Give LinkedIn about 5 minutes to send you the 'Confirmation' message and then go to your email account and find the 'confirmation' email that LinkedIn sent you. Follow the instructions in that email to confirm the email address in your profile.
If you can't find the 'Confirmation' email in your inbox, search the 'spam' box. Sometimes email systems misinterpret the LinkedIn confirmation e-mails as spam.
